Three Weird (But Effective) Methods Of Improving Self Esteem

Lack of confidence and self-esteem causes us to make poor decisions, and to set our goals and expectations far too low. As a personal development coach, I've use many methods with clients of improving self-esteem. Some of these methods are basic common sense, but others are a bit weird or even wacky. If you've listened to the "self-help gurus" and followed all the basic advice about building confidence, but haven't seen great results, perhaps is time to try one of these Quisp unusual methods.

Method 1: Extreme Self Talk

Extreme self talk uses affirmations such as "I believe in myself," "I trust myself completely" or "other people respect me." But what makes this tax debt relief extreme (and let's face it, a bit unorthodox), is that you set aside an hour or two daily to constantly repeat these affirmations, and "pump yourself up."

Unlike regular affirmations, which people tend to do for only a few minutes at a time, extreme self talk requires you to make a serious commitment and set aside (at least) an hour every day to CONSTANTLY recite these affirmations. This method should be followed for 21 days, which is approximately the amount of time needed to establish a new habit.

Method 2: Re-Writing Your Personal Story

Is the fact that many people suffer with low self-esteem because of incidents in their past. But if an episode (or several) in your past caused the lack of self-esteem, rewriting your past can remove the psychological blocks, and put you on the path to improving self-esteem quickly.

Basically, this method is all about using your imagination. Like the first method we discussed, it requires you to set aside time every day for improving self-esteem. But with this method, you won't repeat any affirmations, but simply visualize or "daydream" for 20 to 30 minutes daily.

During these daily visualizations sessions, you will rewrite your history, and "see" it having happened differently. In fact, the most effective way of doing this is to describe your past to yourself exactly as you would have liked it to be. This is a variation on the "fake it till you make it" strategy, because in effect, you will convince yourself that your past is something very different than you had previously thought."

For example, if you were always chosen last for sports in school, you can remember and visualize these experiences, but this time "see" them happening differently -- "see" yourself always being picked first for sports.

When you first start trying to use this method, your mind will attempt to reject the new "version" of history you are sending it. That's normal, and nothing to worry about at all. The key is to continue to rewrite your history consistently (again I recommend doing this for 21 days). After a little while, your subconscious mind will begin to accept your new version of your past as "the truth."

This method sounds almost too easy to be if affective, but don't be fooled. It is one of the most powerful ways of improving self esteem.

Method 3: The "So What" Strategy

The "so what" strategy is another slightly weird but effective way of improving self confidence and self-esteem. Here's how it works:

Self-esteem is notoriously hard to improve by struggling to make change. It often improves much more by simply going with the flow -- that's what the "so what" strategy is all about. With this method, you make a point to recognize areas of your life where you lack self-esteem, and then (here's the weird part), you accept these weaknesses and do NOT try to change them at all.

The strategy is really all about acceptance. Most of us refuse to accept our self-esteem shortcomings, because we mistakenly believe that we will never improve if we completely accept the way we are now. The truth is (and I admit this is somewhat counterintuitive), improving self-esteem is easier when we actually don't "try" to improve anything -- but instead, simply practice accepting ourselves exactly as we are.

This method is called the "so what" strategy because you will be recognizing your lack of confidence and self-esteem in certain areas, but instead of disapproving of it, you simply adopt an attitude of "so what?" You don't try to change it at all.

I will admit that this method is not easy at first for some people. Society often conditions us to be unnecessarily hard on ourselves, and accepting ourselves completely (shortcomings and all) may not come naturally at first. But with time and effort, you will get much better at it. And make no mistake, when it comes to improving self-esteem, acceptance is the absolute best place to start.

You're unlikely to find any of these alternative self-esteem building methods in books or videos. They use a very different approach to improving self-esteem than the usual tips.
